Weblog Project Assistant
Newstex LLC seeks to fill the position of Weblog Project Assistant. This is an excellent part-time opportunity for Internet-savvy persons to work from their home desktop computer.
The Weblog Project Assistant instructs the Newstex computer system to automatically obtain articles from weblogs (blogs) and organize them in numerous respects.
The assistant also takes screenshots of blogs with simple image software, and assembles various spreadsheet reports to help Newstex measure blog performance.
Introductory training is provided to help the specialist understand the Newstex computer system as well as RSS, which is the basis for blog syndication.
Responsibilities:
- examine Atom/RSS files, which to the beginner may closely resemble HTML
- identify RSS and HTML tags that contain key information about each writer’s content
- identify the parts of a web address — the domain, the path, and the filename
- search computer records for information
- cut and paste large web-based reports into Microsoft Excel
- produce periodic spreadsheet reports and occasional instructional documentation
- fill out web forms
- take screen snapshots and save them as GIF or JPEG files
- contact writers to explain technical issues with their blog in plain English
- additional related responsibilities assigned by Newstex
Requirements:
- a passion for blogs, journalism, or new media
- enthusiastic, resourceful, well-organized
- ability to work comfortably at a computer for several hours at a time
- accuracy in typing
- attention to detail
- fast Internet connection (cable or DSL)
- large computer monitor — at least 17 inches — to facilitate simple tasks with large image files
- possession of image software or familiarity with online image tools such as Picnik
- possession of, and experience with, Microsoft Excel
- ability to work independently
- fluency in HTML
- familiarity with blog syndication feeds
- familiarity with databases
- professional written communication skills
- available to work 20-35 hours per week
Preferred:
- Familiarity with a variety of newspaper web sites
- Access to Adobe Photoshop CS3 software on Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). Actual Photoshop skills are not required.
